The Florida Hometown Heroes Program returns August 18, 2025, with $50 million in new funding to support first‑time homebuyers in Florida. If you serve full‑time in an approved service role or are a Florida‑based veteran, you may qualify for up to $35,000 in assistance for your down payment and closing costs. Funds are awarded on a first‑come, first‑served basis—so act quickly.

How It Works

This program gives qualified buyers significant upfront assistance without adding to their monthly mortgage payment.

  • 0% interest, 30-year deferred second loan
  • No monthly payments: repayment only when you sell, refinance, transfer the deed, or the home stops being your primary residence
  • Up to 5% of your first mortgage amount (minimum $10,000, maximum $35,000)
  • Can be applied toward your down payment, closing costs, and certain prepaid expenses

2025 Updates

There are a few key changes you’ll want to know before applying this year.

  • Now available only to full-time Florida workers in approved service roles and Florida-based veterans
  • $50 million funding cap for this cycle
  • Applications open August 18 — early pre-approval is essential to secure funds

Who Qualifies

You’ll need to meet both program guidelines and standard mortgage requirements.

  • Be a first-time homebuyer or meet the 3-year lookback rule (veterans may be exempt)
  • Purchase a primary residence in Florida
  • Have a minimum credit score of 640
  • Meet county income limits, often based on a percentage of the Area Median Income
  • Complete a homebuyer education course (VA borrowers may be exempt)

Hometown Heroes funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and they run out quickly every year.
